Abilities: details here

The particulars of his abilities insofar as his techniques go are linked, but for the most part Sanji is a tough and durable fighter who uses only his legs, though he has fought with knives once before. Though he uses knives as a cook would, so though he is proficient in them, it is not generally something he uses for fighting. He can give and take massive amounts of damage but never fights with his hands because they are a cook’s tools.

Speaking of cooking, that’s his primary skill and he’s amazing at it. Cooking is pretty much his life and his food not only looks and tastes good, but is nutritious.

Background Information: wiki here
Personality Description:

Sanji's close relationships fall into two tiers. Those at the Baratie, his one time floating restaurant home, and those who sail with him under Luffy, his nakama as it were.

In the Baratie, Sanji is closest to Zeff, though their relationship is complex. The chief thing he feels for the old cook is indebtedness. The man saved Sanji’s life by sacrificing his own leg and thus his dream. So Sanji felt that he had to protect Zeff’s new dream, the Baratie, at all costs and allowed the crap to get kicked out of him in the name of protecting it, even prepared to die. Though inasmuch as Sanji feels he owes Zeff, he also has a burning desire to prove himself as a man, a cook, and a fighter and, on the Baratie, had started to strain under Zeff’s direct control as head chef and wanted to get out there and show what he was worth, while at the same time confining himself to the Baratie in order to protect it. They had many arguments and Sanji was kicked around when he said one thing too far.

For Sanji, Zeff is also a father figure and many of his current traits he got from the old cook. For instance, being a man is very important to him, also important is that others acknowledge him as one, so he puts up a tough guy front, especially in front of fellow fighters and strong guys. Though he can be nervous on the inside, in front of an opponent he is cool and derisive, well balanced, confident and ready to kick ass. Never let them see you sweat. Though that doesn’t mean that inside, he isn’t taunt as a bowstring with tension.
Even in front of tough men (notably his crewmate Zoro) he tends to keep this tough posture and is always sparking off Zoro both to tease him and to maintain his own pride as a man. In a similar vein, he tends to internalize more often than not. If he is hurt or worried he tries not to let that show, though sometimes it is more difficult than others. But for him, presentation is everything.

But another thing Zeff taught him and that means more to Sanji than anything is this idea of feeding whomever is hungry. Even if they are an enemy, if they are starving, Sanji will give them food. He knows how it feels to starve to death. Zeff’s dream was to provide a place for even the hungriest to eat and so it is Sanji’s creed. That is not to say he won’t feed an enemy and then kick their ass if it needs kicking.

Needless to say, Sanji’s time with Zeff really formed his core character, both in terms of his sense of presentation and masculinity, unable to really communicate with men in a meaningful way (especially rough guys or ones who might look down on him for doing so) but also a sense of compassion to all those who need him.

He is close in varying ways to all of his crewmates, but since he has eight of them at the moment, let me touch on the ones that most define his characterization.

Luffy is his single most important person. Luffy is his captain and the one he chose to follow to eventually find his dream, (which is a specific ocean called the All Blue). Luffy is the one who freed him up to go and the one who has dreams just as wild and foolish as his own. In Luffy, Sanji finds inspiration to chase after that rainbow as hard as he can, and exasperation as his captain is pretty much a vacuum cleaner and Sanji has to keep booby trapping the fridge to keep him out of it. Luffy’s ability to be exactly who he is without posturing and open and honest nature is what Sanji admires about him and he treats Luffy almost like a little brother. Kind, and goofy on occasion but not afraid to kick him in the head.

Zoro is the one who is closest to Sanji in terms of power and strength and masculinity and so they butt heads a lot. It’s partly because butting heads with tough guys was how Sanji was socialized, but also because at times he considers Zoro and annoying oaf who exists to be a pain in the ass. He likes taunting him, though on occasion that backfires and Zoro will taunt him back, ending up in a fight more often than not. But crewmates are crewmates and Sanji will give up his life for Zoro if needs be.

Nami—well it is here we diverge somewhat to talk about Sanji’s weakness to women because Sanji has a huge huge huge HUGE weakness to women. The thing is that Sanji is actually really warm hearted for all his tough guy posturing and he can’t really take care of men that way but women he allows himself to go full on dorkappotamous mode, gushing and wiggling and heart farting at them as hard as he can. Mind it’s not all some psychological reasoning. Sanji is also a bit of a perv and just a really lusty guy so give him some T&A and he’ll be happy happy happy! He also has a chivalric attitude and will fight just for the sake of a woman’s tears.

Though he is not always a whirlwind of love. He is capbable of treating women normally and even though he likes to look at them, he at the same time respects their person and abilities especially if he is close to them.

For Nami, she gets to see both sides of this. She is both pampered and drooled over but there is never the sense that Sanji doesn’t respect her for who she is. And he does. To him, also, what attracts him most is Nami’s unencumbered nature. Her ability to have a damn good time, but ahh, he likes it when she’s stern, too! And when she’s cruel! And just everything about her! Though that hardly means he’s a one woman man (not that she has any interest in him that way) and will happily love tornado at any attractive woman he sees should the mood strike him.

This attitude toward women also can bite him in the ass, too, because he can’t kick or harm a woman even if she is an enemy and even to his own detriment. It’s hard for him to resist a beautiful female antagonist but resist he will try to do to his utmost because as much as he loves women, his crewmates mean so much more to him.

Usopp is the most normal guy in the crew and Sanji is, in many ways, the second most normal and so they have a kind of bond. Usopp is not as carefree as Luffy and is also not as confident, really lacking in self esteem, and Sanji who has boundless confidence is aware of this and tries to help Usopp along on occasion. He doesn’t really posture with Usopp all that much but he is also not above tormenting him by saying that if it was a choice between him or Nami, he doesn’t care if Usopp dies. It’s mostly a joke since he would likely save Usopp anyway, but it’s partly a push to say he doesn’t care too much about Usopp because he is a man made for women only (at least in terms of rescuing) but it’s also in part so that Usopp doesn’t rely on him and gets on to do some action himself.

He recognizes when things have gone too far, though because as much as he postures, he deeply understands the emotions and motivations of most of the crew. Usopp can bring out his rough gentle side but he can also goof off with Usopp (as well as Luffy) but still treats Usopp as a younger brother.

Chopper, by being the most childlike, really displays how Sanji is with kids, and it’s pretty gentle. While he doesn’t really appreciate men clinging to him, he’s okay with Chopper grabbing onto his leg. He’s pretty understanding of Chopper since the reindeer does tend to freak out but then always goes forward and tries his best anyway. That doesn’t stop Sanji from calling him an emergency food supply just to mess with his head but that happens only rarely.

As for Sanji’s childhood, we don’t really know much about his early childhood before he served on the Orbit, but whatever it was set him up to be seriously workminded. Adding to that meeting with Zeff and establishing and working on the Baratie. Sanji is continually working and working hard, mostly cooking which is his passion. His childhood, especially the time he spent starving to death on a barren rock, also gave him an appreciation of food. Not only does he feed anyone who is hungry, he does his best not to waste a single scrap because the sea is unpredictable and you never know when you might be hungry again.

(I also headcanon, though I don’t have any exact proof, is that part of the reason he smokes so much is because it’s an appetite suppressant so he can control when he’s hungry)

Additionally, much of his childhood and all of his adolescence was spent on a ship. Therefore he knows his way around a ship and around the sea and is very much a sailor. He’s picked up all sorts of interesting tales from those who have come through the Baratie’s doors and has a well rounded knowledge of the world that he lives in.

Sanji handles stress by smoking. A lot. If he’s really stressed it’s even hard for him to light up. He’s actually kind of high strung (though that’s eased somewhat) but whatever the stress is, he keeps moving forward. He uses stress to fuel his attacks and doesn’t let it slow him down. A change in major life decisions is approached much the same way. While he might stress over it, he doesn’t let it stop him from doing what is important or completing the goal of the moment.

Sanji’s major goal in life is to find the mythical ocean of the All Blue where all the fish in the world are said to converge. Otherwise his main concern is keeping his crew fed and fighting alongside them.

Sanji is not really one given to fears and doubts since he’s largely optimistic up to the point where he sees no other way to win this but self sacrifice (of his own self) though he really does not like spiders, centipedes, moths or bugs of any kind. They creep him the hell out and as much posturing as he has, he can’t help but get the willies when one of them is around.

Sanji likes to look good. He’s a bit of a dandy that way but it ties back into presentation. He likes to come off tailored and professional but approachable and unlike his other male crewmates he bathes daily. While he will dress down on occasion to be comfortable, he likes to class it up. Dislikes, well he’s not fond of bugs as I said or anyone who would cause a woman to cry.

To sum up, Sanji is tough on the outside but with a firey passionate heart on the inside that breaks through because when it comes down to the wire, he would rather be passionate than tough, even though being a man is at the forefront of his mind. He is a cook who would feed anyone and loves the preparation of food, but also knows how to scrape together the bare essentials. It’s not just about presentation but nutrition and survival. He is a survivor and an optimist but would sacrifice his life for a friend. He likes to be acknowledged but when push comes to shove his primary goal is always just to get things done. He is a prince to all beautiful women, even to his detriment, and somewhat of a pervert but never considers them less than what they are, that is, a person. He is tough and caring and passionate and silly and smokes like a chimney.

Third Person Sample:

This was shit. It wasn’t the first time that Sanji had ended up trying to scrape together odds and ends to get a proper meal, or any kind of sustenance, but never had he had to do it in such a run down place before. Never such a desperate place. He watches from the cracked window, smoking idly, as a ghost drifts through the city streets below. What did it die from, he wondered. Why did it hang around this place? They usually did because the couldn’t rest, right? And who would want to in that spooky as shit graveyard. Maybe they’d just rather be out and about. Active. Even if there was nothing to look at but grey and dark.
Sanji sighed and looked at the cigarette, carefully putting it out between his fingers and stowing it back in its pack. Cigs were a shitty rarity around here and he needed to save them for when he really needed them. He wasn’t about to go without them. Not in this place. But finding them seemed to be increasingly harder. But with cigarettes or without, he would survive this hellhole somehow. He had to. There were people waiting for him.

He rested the tips of his fingers on the kitchen counter, still grimy looking even after all attempts to clean it, and closed his eyes, remembering, trying to. That bright and sunny ship. The sea air. The blue sky. His nakama. Luffy. Nami with her abundant charms in her small bikini top sunning herself and maybe, maybe waiting for her prince to rub lotion on the small of her warm sun-kissed back and then—and then--! Ah, just thinking about it was enough to give him a jolt of sunshine! Though it lasted all the way until he opened his eyes to the gloom again.

Well, one day he would see her again.

One day he would see them all and go back where he belonged in that wonderful shitty galley on the wonderful shitty ship and his wonderful shitty nakama. He’d just have to keep it going until then.

And he would.

But for now there were hungry people, starving to death out on shitty streets because some king was an asshole. Kicking his ass would also have to happen, Sanji was sure. But that was one shitty day and not now. Now… He got a pan out from the lower cabinet, clicking his teeth at the chipped sides and rusted handle. He’d have to get a new one soon. But for the moment it would service. He got a few precious eggs from the black market , not enough to stretch for long but enough to get a good shitty kick of protein in their diet, as well as rice enough for a dozen or so if he meted it out well. He’d have to eat some too, he reminded himself. Just to keep going one more day. He lit the stove and thought about lighting the shitty cigarette that was already back in his mouth somehow, but then changed his mind and chewed on the filter instead. As long as he was here, he would have to preserve what he had.
